Kemptville firefighters took top honours at the 96th Eastern Ontario Firefighters Association games on Saturday, June 21.

Firefighters from Prescott, Cardinal, Athens, Augusta, Iroquois, Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills, Edwardsburg and Kemptville all arrived in Iroquois on Saturday to take part in the games.

Prescott OPP has re-opened the northbound passing lane of Hwy. 416 after a single vehicle accident.

Police were called to the scene of the accident after a northbound 1996 Jeep veered left of the road, struck the gravel and rolled, coming to rest on the  passing lane of the highway.

The Kemptville Fire Department hopes to regain the coveted Iroquois Cup at the 96th Eastern Ontario Firefighters Association convention on June 21.

The day, which is being held outside the fire hall in Iroquois, includes competitions such as hose coupling and ladder climbing.

A group of concerned parents boarded a bus to Queens Park on June 10 to support Leeds-Grenville MPP Bob Runciman’s attempt to put a stop to rural school closures.

The motion, which proposed postponing the closures until a review of the provincial funding formula and assessment of school uses had been completed, was defeated by a vote of 48 to 16.

Community Living Dundas County welcomed guests, neighbours, staff and well-wishers to view its newest facility in Morrisburg at an open house held on Wednesday, May 28.

Visitors found the house renovated to accommodate clients with mobility issues. Community Living provides support for individuals with intellectual disabilities, and helps to integrate them into the community.

In order to commemorate 50 years of education in the community, the parent council at Iroquois Public School decided to create a unique cookbook containing recipes submitted by staff and students at the school.

The book, entitled Our Favorite Recipes, contains instructions for preparing everything from soup to sidewalk chalk, is attractively bound and easy to use.

A rainy weekend couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 168 Cubs taking part in an end of the year camp last weekend at Camp Sheldrick.

The cubs arrived from Brockville, Kemptville, Spencerville, Prescott, Iroquois, Morrisburg, Mallorytown as well as Nepean, and one of the first tasks was to break the group into tribes.

Upper Canada District School Board trustees voted to close 13 elementary schools and send Grades 7 and 8 students to high school at a special board meeting last Wednesday.

The schools facing closure are Carambeck, Morewood, Elma, Inkerman, Maple Ridge, Martintown, Gladstone, East Front, Dixon's Corners, Maitland, Algonquin, Central and North Edwardsburgh.
